When Monroe County Public Library set out to design a new branch that would serve as both a gathering place and a community destination, they turned to Christine Matheu of Matheu Architects, PC. The goal? Create a space that feels like an extension of the surrounding wooded landscape — warm, welcoming, and rooted in nature.
The result is the stunning Southwest Branch of Monroe County Public Library, a design-forward facility that thoughtfully balances functionality with beauty. With dedicated spaces for children, teens, and adults, the library fosters learning, collaboration, and a sense of belonging for all who visit. It even includes standout features like a learning kitchen and an amphitheater with raised seating, offering a truly dynamic and inclusive experience for the community.
To bring the “outdoors-in” vision to life, Matheu incorporated a natural palette of light wood tones, soft greens, and calming neutrals. The design also focuses on tactile engagement, making the space feel approachable and sensory-friendly for all ages.
Throughout the Southwest Branch, you’ll find a thoughtfully curated selection of Allsteel furniture that complements the design and supports flexibility in how people use the space:
- Align Lockers
- Altitude Tables
- Approach Desking
- Belong Tables
- Further
- Jetty:Mod
- Rise Tables
- Rise Lounge
- Rock Chairs
- Structure Tables
We’re proud to have partnered on this inspiring library project — and even prouder that it earned Christine Matheu a 2024 AIA Indianapolis Design Excellence Citation Award!
